Djembe Forte

West African (Guinea) drumming and dance.
Rhythm, community, energy and cultural respect.

Welcome

Djembe Forte is a welcoming space to explore the rhythms, movements and community spirit of West African (Guinea) drum and dance.
Whether you’re completely new or have some experience, you’re invited to learn, move, listen and play together in a supportive and down-to-earth environment.

This work is joyful, energising and deeply connective — bringing people together through rhythm, song and shared experience.

What We Offer

Beginning in 2026, Djembe Forte will offer:

Weekly drum and dance classes
Monthly workshops focusing on specific rhythms, songs and cultural context
• Sessions open to adults of all backgrounds and experience levels

Classes are designed to be inclusive, rhythmic and embodied, supporting both learning and enjoyment. You don’t need to be “musical” or “fit” — just curious and willing to participate.

Our Approach

At Djembe Forte, learning happens through:
• Listening
• Repetition
• Movement
• Call and response
• Shared rhythm

We honour the traditional rhythms and songs of Guinea, while teaching in a way that is accessible, respectful and community-focused. Drumming and dance are taught together, reflecting how they live side-by-side in West African culture.

There is space to learn steadily, make mistakes, laugh, and grow in confidence over time.

Lineage & Learning

My journey with West African drum and dance began in 2015. I have studied with Mohamed Bangoura through his Canberra term classes and participated in his Drum and Dance Study Tour in Guinea in 2018.

Djembe Forte acknowledges the cultural origins of this work and approaches it with respect, gratitude and humility. We learn as students of the tradition, sharing what has been passed on in a way that supports community connection here.

People are often drawn to West African rhythm because it:
• Builds a strong sense of connection and belonging
• Supports coordination, grounding and vitality
• Encourages joyful movement and expression
• Brings mind and body together through rhythm

Many students find drumming and dance to be both uplifting and grounding, offering a powerful contrast to the pace of everyday life.
